Local Customs – Rome

There are many local customs in Rome. One of these is coffee. This is nothing like any kind of coffee found in America. There are many different varieties, including cappuccino, espresso, and “caffe Americano,” which is basically a shot of coffee mixed with more water for a bigger cup. It would be a big help for any tourists traveling to the area to know the different choices in beverages, so they can really experience the taste of Rome.

Besides “caffe Americano,” there is “caffe macchiato,” “caffe con panna,” and “caffe latte.” “Macchiato” is known as stained coffee, or coffee with a little bit of milk in it. “Caffe con panna” is coffee that has cream instead of milk. “Caffe latte” is popular with tourists, since it includes steamed milk and foam on top. A little known drink is “caffe coretto,” which has a little bit of alcohol in it. The alcohol can be whiskey, grappa, or amaretto.

Sundays in Rome are a slow, quiet day. Many Italians attend church on Sundays, then stop by the bar for an espresso on the way home. The traffic even seems to die down, and most businesses are closed.

Another Roman custom is the “coperto,” or cover charge at restaurants. This is a cover charge added to your bill at every restaurant you travel to. This charge covers the cost of clearing the table when you leave, as well as the cost of any bread or snacks put out on the table. Most places will charge you even if you do not purchase anything.

Tossing a coin into the Trevi fountain is a custom for tourists. It is said that if you should toss coins with your right hand over your left shoulder. It is also said that tossing one coin will ensure a speedy return to Rome, while two coins mean you will fall in love in Rome. Three coins mean marriage!

Keeping up with these customs will make one feel truly at home in the Eternal City. Make sure when you visit the city you stop for a coffee, enjoy a quiet Sunday, and toss a few coins into the Trevi Fountain!
