When vacationing in Rome, it is very difficult to find enough time to visit all of the places of interest that the city has to offer. Even the most ambitious tourists have trouble finding the time to experience all that Rome has to offer, which is why its especially important to see the best places first and work your way down.
The Trevi Fountain is by far one of the most tranquil places Rome has to offer. Nestled among tall buildings, the echo of the fountain is a perfect accent to its unsurpassed beauty. Street vendors often set up shop around the fountain selling everything from hand-painted rosary beads to bottled water. An insider tip on visiting the Trevi Fountain – go at night. The essence of the fountain is unsurpassed in the moonlight without mobs of tourists and vendors there to take away from its natural beauty. There are few things as tranquil as watching the water flow in the glow of the blue light of the fountain listening to the sounds of the water. And be sure to throw a coin in with your back facing the fountain so that you will be granted a return trip to Rome!
The Pantheon is within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain. The path between the two is lined with vendors making for a very enjoyable (but lengthy) walk. The Temple of the Pantheon is famous for many things, most notably being that it is the resting place of Renaissance artist Raphael. When you enter the beautiful building, you immediately notice the natural sunlight flowing through a round hole at the tip of the dome. To the right you see beautiful remnants from the past, and to the left you see the remarkable resting place of Raphael. Across from the Pantheon is a McDonald’s with a Euro Menu (comparable to the Dollar Menu in America) which is a very affordable stop on your tour through a sometimes expensive city.
The Castel Sant’Angelo is arguably one of Rome’s most beautiful architectural structures. From the top of the steps you can see an amazing view of both the city and the Tiber River. The Castel Sant’Angelo served in the past as a fortress for the Pope, and is still connected to the Vatican by a secret passageway.
The Vatican is arguably one of the most exciting places to visit in Rome. Vatican City has more to offer than can be experienced in an entire week. Within the Vatican there are countless things to see and do – museums including Michaelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, the tombs of past Popes (including Pope John Paul II), a 600-step climb to the top of Saint Peter’s Basilica, etc. So many that many visitors miss out on seeing parts of the Vatical due to running out of time. The Vatican also offers a life altering event – being a member of the Papal audience.
