There are many different holidays celebrated in Rome. While some are national holidays, others are religious. There are 11 public holidays in Rome, spread out across the year.

January 1st is celebrated universally around the world as New Year’s Day. The first day of the year means that businesses close so that everyone can recuperate from celebrating the New Year the night before.

January 6th is the Epiphany. This is a Christian feast day, celebrating the visitation of the Magi to Jesus as an infant.

The day after Easter, Easter Monday, is also a public holiday in Rome.

April 25th is celebrated as Liberation Day, celebrating the liberation of Italy after the end of World War II in Europe. Italy was released from fascist rule and released from German occupation.

May 1st, May Day, is celebrated as Labour Day. In many places it is also known as International Workers Rights day, where workers rally for rights such as eight hour workdays.

June 2nd
is celebrated as the anniversary of the Republic, celebrating the creation of the Italian Republic. Previous to June 2nd 1946, Italy was ruled as a monarchy by the House of Savoy. This created a democratic society and a united Italy.

All of the other holidays celebrated are Christian holidays.

August 15 is the Assumption, also known as the Assumption of Mary. This is the taking up of Mary into heaven.

November 1st is All Saints Day, celebrating all those who have achieved sainthood.

December 8th is the Immaculate Conception, which is the conception of Mary in her mother’s womb without Original Sin.

December 25th is Christmas, which celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ.

December 26th is also a holiday, St. Stephen’s Day. This celebrates the first Christian martyr, Stephen.
