Transportation in Rome

Home > Rome Hotels > Transportation in Rome

When in Rome, travelers often regret their first day wearing anything but their most comfortable pair of shoes. It is both difficult and distressing to try and drive or park in Rome. Many of the locals drive Vespas to avoid having to find parking spots, and the streets are often fast paced and crowded.

For travelers visiting Rome, where are quite a few options for easy and affordable transportation. Travelers can ride the busses, hop on the metro, hail a taxi or rent a Vespa.

The first choice of both travelers and natives alike are the bus lines. The Roman bus lines cover the entire city and run frequently, 24 hours a day. There are two busses in Rome, day busses and night busses. Hundreds of bus lines run from 5:30am to midnight in both directions. Night busses are a bit more limited, with only 20 lines running from 12:30am to 5:30am at half hour intervals.

The second choice that travelers have is taking the metro. The metro only has two lines (the red and the blue), but if you are staying anywhere near a station, they are a very quick way to travel around the city. The Red and Blue lines meet at Rome’s main train station, Termini Central Station, and run every 7-10 minutes from 5:30am to 12:00am every day (12:30am on Saturdays). While the metro may require a little more walking, the lines are simpler for travelers to ride and make for an easier mode of transportation for ‘beginners’.

The third choice that travelers have is taking a taxi. Taxis must be official metered white or yellow taxis, if it does not look right or does not have a meter do not accept their services. Make sure every taxi you take is metered. There are taxi stops sporadically throughout the city where you can catch a ride, but hailing a taxi off the street is nearly impossible.

The last (and favorite) choice of daring travelers looking to truly ‘do as the Romans do’ is renting a Vespa. As you explore Rome you will see Romans buzzing everywhere on their two wheel scooters – whether dressed in a suit for work, or in a dress to go out at night, Vespas are Roman’s first choice of travel. Vespas can be rented all over Rome.
