When traveling to Rome, it is imperative that you pick the right time to travel. While most of the year offers generally comfortable weather, during the summer months Rome gets unpleasantly hot – so much so that shop owners often close their doors and vacate the City until the cool weather returns.
The absolute best time to visit Rome is the fall months of September and October. During these months the days are warm (though be warned – early September may be a bit too warm!), the nights are cool, and the rainfall is at a minimum. While these times offer the nicest weather - a must due to the volume of walking, dining, and waiting outdoors that you will do on your trip – these are also the times where busses are packed with tourists, lines are long at attractions, and the general hustle and bustle of all the best places to visit take away slightly from the essence of your visit.
The next best time to travel to Rome is the spring months of April and May. During April the days will be warm but not hot as in September, and the nights will be very chilly. The rainfall will be at a minimum, gradually decreasing as you travel further into April.
While summer is generally a popular time to travel because the kids are off from school and time off is easier to come by, travel in Rome is highly discouraged in June and July. The temperatures soar into the 90’s and there is little relief from the stifling heat. While it may seem that the 90’s are nothing, travelers be ware – Rome is composed of mainly asphalt streets and stone buildings that retain heat – this may make a hotel room without air conditioning stifling hot. If the locals vacate for the summer months seeking relief from the heat, it is advised that you follow suit.
